Tennessee River Artist Blacksmith Association offers a class to members which is called our "Green Coal Class". In this class, you will learn the basics of blacksmithing which are a universal method of operating a forge and moving hot metal under a hammer.

Some key points offered in the class include :
  • Parts of an anvil
  • Parts of coal forge
  • How to start and operate a coal forge
  • How to draw out metal
  • Create twists in hot steel
  • How to upset metal (Enlarging from starting size at a specific point)
  • Scrolls
  • Forge Welding
  • And MUCH more!

Why take the Green Coal class?

Some smiths may be just starting out, and some may have more time behind the hammer than many others. The class is developed to teach the basics to those just starting out and to ensure those with more experience operate our group forges with the same basic methods.

Upon completing the Green Coal class, members of TRABA are able to participate in Open Forge events and can operate the group's provided equipment.
